In this marvellous painting, the tortured artist is depicted with his body smeared and his head obscured by a cloud of black paint. But look at the tube of paint spilling out in the bottom left corner: whole universes circulate, and it is the same in the head of the artist too. The "tortured" artist dreams of infinite possibilities and paint is the medium through which he achieves them. The row of stylised figures crossing the centre of the painting represent the history of art, and the smears on his body his recognition that man is the creation of his own art. This is a wonderful imaginative painting.
