Stephen B. Whatley, born in London in 1965, is a leading British painter in oils of landscapes, cityscapes, still-life and portraits. In 1999, London Transport commissioned the artist to paint inside Buckingham Palace, The Grand Staircase, for reproduction on posters all over the London Underground. Also, The Royal Collection commissioned Stephen to paint an exterior view of the Palace to advertise the opening of the State Rooms in 1999 and 2000.
Stephen B Whatley painting the Tate Gallery on location in London UK in September 1997, during its centenary year. When working from life, the artist uniquely completes a painting in a matter of hours - a heated period of intensive concentration, an explosion, from his heart and soul, of spontaneous Expressionism - the culmination of several days build-up of emotional and nervous energy. This painting is now in a Private Collection in Tokyo, Japan. |

In another project, in 2000, Stephen was commissioned by Historic Royal Palaces to undertake a series of 30 paintings for Her Majesty's Tower of London. These paintings were reproduced on steel vitreous enamel panels lining the walls of the Tower Hill pedestrian underpass - which is the main entrance portal to the Tower of London from Tower Hill Underground Station. |
