Stuart Armfield (1916-2000) was a proponent of painting in egg tempera, a technique he learned from his uncle, the noted painter Maxwell Armfield. He later wrote the manual "Tempera Painting" which is still referred to today. He worked for the Art Department at Ealing Films during the 1930's, working on films such as "Sing As We Go" with Gracie Fields, and "I See Ice" with George Formby. After the Second World War he based himself in Cornwall and produced symbolist paintings featuring black models, chessboards and keys. His work was collected by (amongst others) King Hassan of Morocco, the exiled Prince Chula of Thailand, and the actor Eric Portman
