The artist writes: "I call this technique of mine ‘Paintography’. I like to blur the boundaries of what is perceived as a photograph and what is perceived as a painting.I use a black and white photograph of mine as the central motif which is printed onto slightly textured art paper and then I bleach out all of the background except for a small area around the figure. I give this blank area a light going over with fine sandpaper to raise the texture and then I paint in the background in gouache and occasionally inks. Having completed the painting I then deliberately distress the background with more usage of sandpaper and a scalpel to scratch away areas of the paint. I will tear certain areas of the image to create a kind of ‘used and abused’ look and then the whole picture is given two coats of matt spray varnish to protect it and also to make it light –fast. I often use a crackle glaze  2 part varnish before the final protective coating to achieve an even more distressed look. Sometimes this can go wrong, but I like that, as those random accidents can add an unexpected new twist to a picture. I usually work in muted colours but in this case I felt that the picture worked best in black and white."   Tim Dry
