Martin Battersby (1914-1982) studied architecture in London and spent 5 years in the studio of Gill and Reigate. He became a set designer for The Old Vic, as a painter he specialized in trompe l’oeil and painted many rooms around the world. Battersby is probably best known for his collecting of Art- Nouveau and Art Deco and writing books on the subject. Helped to establish Brighton Museums collection of 20th Century design. In the 1960's became interested in the youth culture and leatherwear of the period. The painting of Marlon Brando comes from the same period
