Captain Edward Molyneux was a famous corturier who was prominent in Paris in the first half of the 20th century. Born in London in 1891 he served as an officer in the First World War where he was wounded in the eye. After the war he built a career in fashion, opening his Paris salon in the Rue Royale in 1919. He was famous for his quip that you could be "never too rich or too thin". He had a famous clientele including British royalty as well as Greta Garbo, Gertrude Lawrence andand Vivien Leigh. He as great friends with Noel Coward. He retired in 1959 to take up painting and lived in the South of France. His paintings were exhibited at the Galerie Weill lin Paris and at the Hammer Galleries in New York. His patrons included the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and Greta Garbo. Captain Molyneux was also an avid art collector, and possessed paintings by Picasso, Monet, Manet and Renoir. His collection is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.
