Russian-born Antonin Soungouroff (1894-1982) settled in the south of France and made his name as an artist with his portraits of attractive young men particularly young fishermen, legionnaires, sailors and soldiers. Even in those more oppressive times, his work demonstrates and openly gay sensibility. He was friends with many prominent artists and writers including Jean Cocteau, Christian Berard and Roger Peyrefitte.
