The Process of chalk-manner prints and Gilles de Marteau (1722-1776)   6/2/2010
Reviewed by: Joseph Messer from Florida, USA.
This is an etching, not a lithograph. The correct term is "chalk-manner" print. Carle van Loo (1705-1765) did the drawing.Van Loo did not invent the process. The printmaker was Gilles de Marteau (1722-1776). De Marteau was court engraver to King Louis XV. De Marteau is one of the most important engravers of his period. The chalk-manner was first used in 1735 by engravers Pond and Knapton in England and thereafter the French Engraver Jean-Charles Francois brought the technique toFrance
