A framed 18th century sanguine (as if in red pastel) lithograph by Vanloo. Vanloo was the artist who invented the lithographic process of creating an image so faithful to the original that it could pass as an actual red pastel drawing. Image dimension approximately 53 x 42 cms (21" x 16.5"). Framed dimension 73 x 63 cms (29" x 25")

This is an etching, not a lithograph. The correct term is "chalk-manner" print. Carle van Loo (1705-1765) did the drawing.Van Loo did not invent the process.The printmaker was Gilles de Marteau (1722-1776). De Marteau was court engraver to King Louis XV. De Marteau is one of the most important engravers of his period. The chalk-manner was first used in 1735 by engravers Pond and Knapton in England and thereafter the French Engraver Jean-Charles Francois brought the technique toFrance
